The appointment process for the new Rector of COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) has come under intense scrutiny amid allegations of misconduct, procedural violations, and political interference.
The recent nomination of Dr. Raheel Qamar as the top candidate has sparked widespread outrage among academic circles.
On August 20, the Federal Minister for Science and Technology chaired a special Senate meeting under the COMSATS University Act 2018 to finalize a panel of three candidates for the Rector’s position.
However, sources allege that the process bypassed the legally mandated Search Committee, raising serious concerns about transparency and procedural integrity.
Sources allege that the Senate overstepped its jurisdiction by proposing names without the Search Committee’s recommendations, a move deemed a direct violation of the university’s statutes. The committee had earlier advised that the position either be re-advertised or filled from among previously shortlisted candidates.
“The Search Committee exists to ensure fairness, merit, and transparency. Overriding its recommendations undermines the very foundation of institutional governance,” said a senior faculty member, speaking on condition of anonymity.
COMSATS University, renowned for its contributions to science and technology, now risks reputational damage both locally and internationally. Whispers of internal discord and lack of transparency are already circulating in academic networks and donor organizations.
“If the leadership crisis escalates, the university could face funding cuts, collaboration breakdowns, and international isolation,” warned a former Higher Education Commission official.
COMSATS University did not respond to this request for comment regarding the Rector’s appointment.
