Electricity Prices Cut by Rs. 1.71 per Unit Nationwide for Three Months

Power prices across the country, including in Karachi, will be reduced by Rs1.71 per unit for the period from April to June, according to a notification from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA). The decision follows a review by NEPRA, which took into account submissions from the federal government and feedback from various stakeholders. “The Authority has carefully considered the submissions made by the Federal Government in the Motion & during hearing and comments from the stakeholders,” the announcement stated. NEPRA also noted that the Ministry of Energy had opted to use the Petroleum Development Levy (PDL) to provide additional subsidies for electricity consumers of XWDISCOs and K-Electric, excluding lifeline customers. This will be in effect from April 2025 to June 2025, without any changes to NEPRA’s determined tariff or the revenue requirements of the distribution companies (DISCOs). “The Authority observed that the Ministry has chosen to use the Petroleum Development Levy (PDL) to give additional subsidies to electricity consumers of XWDISCOs and K-Electric, with the exception of lifeline Rs. 1.71/kWh, from April 2025 to June 2025, without requesting any changes to the NEPRA’s determined tariff or Revenue Requirement of DISCOs. Furthermore, none of the stakeholders voiced any objections,” the notice added. Earlier, the federal government had requested NEPRA to increase tariff difference subsidies. NEPRA held a hearing on this request on April 4, and after considering it, the authority approved the subsidy. “In view thereof, the Authority has no objection on the instant Motion, as it does not impact NEPRA’s determined tariff, since the GOP has decided to provide additional subsidy from the expected collection of PDL,” the notice said. The approved subsidy of Rs. 1.71 per unit will benefit all consumers of XWDISCOs and K-Electric, excluding lifeline users, during the three-month period.
