Govt to Put QR Codes in All Utility Bills to Encourage Digital Payments
The federal government has directed that all electricity, telephone, and gas bills must carry printed QR codes to enable digital payments. The decision was finalized in a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, reported a news daily. Separately, the Secretary Petroleum and OGRA Chairman will prepare a plan within a month to mandate QR code, PoS, and soft PoS payment options at all fuel stations nationwide. The Capital Development Authority (CDA) Chairman will review existing laws to mandate digital payment acceptance across utilities and services. Revised digital payment targets for SBP were also approved. The Finance Ministry and SBP will raise the subsidy ceiling to Rs. 3.5 billion to support digital payments, with banks allowed to charge merchants a maximum MDR of 0.25 percent. Any excess cost will be absorbed by the service providers. The Government Payments Sub-Committee will revise implementation timelines in consultation with provinces.
