The federal government has introduced new measures in the 2025-26 budget to combat tax evasion and misuse of National Tax Numbers (NTNs). High-level sources told ProPakistani that individuals found guilty of knowingly using false NTNs or Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) numbers will face severe penalties. Those who misuse NTNs or CNIC numbers on tax returns or other documents will be liable to pay a fine of up to Rs. 500,000 and may face imprisonment for a term of three years. This means that a person who knowingly uses a false NTN/CNIC number on a return or any other document prescribed under this Ordinance and such use is discovered under any proceedings or during an enquiry or investigation under Section 230(2)(a), shall pay a Rs. 500,000 fine and spend 3 years in jail.
