The Punjab government has approved a comprehensive renovation plan for the Lahore Metro Bus system, with an estimated cost exceeding Rs 5 billion. The project aims to upgrade the infrastructure, transition to solar power, and enhance commuter facilities.
According to City42, official documents show that the government will spend Rs 2.105 billion on the restoration and renovation of 25 metro stations.
An additional Rs 1.7 billion has been allocated to shift all stations to solar power. Meanwhile, Rs 1.5 billion will be used to restore the existing metro track.
The renovation plan also includes upgrades to pedestrian bridges, improvements to ticketing booths, and polishing of platforms to enhance overall usability and aesthetics.
Punjab’s Transport Minister stated that the engineering firm NESPAK conducted a detailed survey and cost assessment on the instructions of the Chief Minister. He added that the previous government had neglected the Lahore Metro and was in urgent need of investment to maintain service quality.
As part of the province’s sustainability efforts, the minister also announced that all metro buses will eventually be converted to electric vehicles. This move is intended to reduce environmental impact and modernize the public transportation system in line with global trends.
