The federal government has directed the Director General of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to initiate a formal inquiry into the alleged theft or loss of an official government vehicle designated for the use of foreign dignitaries.
According to a letter obtained by ProPakistani, the Cabinet Division has requested the FIA to investigate four officers/officials allegedly involved in the disappearance of a Government Vehicle which was assigned to the Car Pool Section for diplomatic purposes.
The individuals identified in the request include Muhammad Amir Qureshi, Section Officer, CPC, Cabinet Division, Rashid Saleem Bhatti, Section Officer, Maritime Affairs Division, Muhammad Bashir, Driver, Cabinet Division, and Irshad Ali Shah, Transport Supervisor, Cabinet Division.
Sources told ProPakistani that an internal fact-finding inquiry, conducted by the Cabinet Division and endorsed by the competent authority, allegedly contains specific findings and recommendations implicating these individuals in the vehicle’s theft or loss and suggests possible criminal liability.
In view of the seriousness of the matter and its broader implications, the Cabinet Division has forwarded the inquiry report to the FIA, requesting that a formal investigation be launched to determine the extent of the criminal conduct and initiate appropriate legal action against those found responsible.
Sources added that a former Joint Secretary of the Cabinet Division may also be implicated. Allegedly, Section Officer Amir Qureshi handed over the vehicle to a woman on the instructions of the then Joint Secretary (Administration).
Islamabad police officials alerted the Secretary of the Cabinet Division when the woman attempted to enter the Diplomatic Enclave without proper clearance using the said vehicle.
The former Joint Secretary has since claimed to have no knowledge of the vehicle’s whereabouts, leaving further clarification to the FIA investigation.
It is worth noting that the Car Pool Section of the Cabinet Division maintains a fleet of over 400 luxury vehicles. These are primarily used by the Prime Minister and cabinet members, and are also assigned to transport foreign dignitaries during official visits to Pakistan.
