Man Falls Victim to $850,000 Crypto Theft at Karachi Airport
A District and Sessions Court in Malir has ordered an inquiry after a man alleged that two men at Karachi Airport stole his mobile phone and transferred roughly $850,000 from his digital-currency account. The case was heard after a citizen filed a petition against the snatching of his belongings and the failure to register an FIR. The complainant claimed that on September 30, while travelling to Peshawar, he was stopped by two plainclothes men at the airport. He alleged that the men took him into a room, confiscated his mobile phone, and transferred USD 850,000 worth of digital currency from his account. During the hearing, the police submitted a report and a USB containing related evidence before the court. The petitioner requested the court to ensure a fair investigation and protection of his life, saying the incident involved organized individuals who targeted him specifically. The court directed the SSP Malir to conduct a thorough inquiry and ordered that the investigation be carried out by an officer of DSP rank. The case has raised serious questions about security and oversight at Pakistan’s airports, particularly in handling incidents involving digital financial assets.
