Pakistan Crosses 200 Million Telecom Subscribers Mark
Pakistan has crossed a major milestone in its digital journey, with total mobile subscriptions surpassing the 200 million mark. According to sources, this achievement will be officially announced by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif during a national ceremony to mark World Telecommunication and Information Society Day. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is organizing the event, with the announcement expected to coincide with an update of official figures on the PTA’s platform. The celebration was initially scheduled to take place today, with invitations sent to key stakeholders and dignitaries. However, the event was postponed due to the unavailability of the Prime Minister. The ceremony is now expected to be held on either May 16 or 17, 2025, under the patronage of the Prime Minister. As part of the celebrations, PTA is collaborating with licensed Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and Mobile Device Manufacturers (MDMs) to offer public-focused initiatives. MNOs have pledged to provide free data and voice bundles to subscribers nationwide on the day of the event. The initiative is designed to appreciate the public’s role in this achievement and encourage broader digital access. In addition, the PTA has invited Mobile Device Manufacturers to contribute 10 to 15 mid-range smartphones for distribution to event attendees through a lucky draw. This gesture is intended to symbolize the industry’s collective commitment to digital inclusion and to bridge the connectivity gap in underserved communities.
