Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a high-level review meeting on the ongoing reforms at the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) on Tuesday, directing authorities to fast-track the completion of the Income Tax and Sales Taxpayer Directory as a means of recognizing honest taxpayers.
The Prime Minister emphasized that responsible citizens who pay their taxes regularly form the backbone of Pakistan’s economy. He said acknowledging taxpayers while exposing tax evaders would help broaden the tax base and strengthen compliance.
The Prime Minister instructed the FBR to provide a business-friendly environment and maximum facilitation to taxpayers. At the same time, he ordered experts to identify tax evaders and recover dues. “Not only should FBR’s own workforce be utilized, but private sector services must also be engaged to identify individuals and companies involved in tax evasion,” he added.
He also called for a public awareness campaign to inform citizens about the government’s measures against tax evasion and its impact on the economy.
On customs reforms, the Prime Minister directed that top international auditors be engaged for third-party reviews of misdeclaration and under-invoicing in customs clearance. He said such reviews should continue to highlight systemic flaws and ensure continuous improvement.
During the briefing, the Prime Minister was informed that work on the taxpayer directory was progressing swiftly, and a scientific auditing system had been designed for customs oversight. Under this system, “super auditors” have been appointed to thoroughly review the customs clearance and risk management mechanisms. The findings will be used to strengthen the risk management system and plug loopholes.
