SPI-Based Inflation Increased 0.76% This Week

The Sensitive Price Index (SPI) -based inflation for the week ended July 18, 2024, increased by 0.76 percent due to an increase in the prices of chicken (10.26 percent), powdered milk (4.56 percent), petrol (3.77 percent), eggs (2.76 percent), potatoes (2.30 percent), diesel (2.25 percent) and garlic (2.20 percent), says Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS). The year-on-year trend depicts an increase of 24.36 percent mainly due to an increase in the prices of gas charges for q1 (570 percent), onions (105.46 percent), tomatoes (57.70 percent), powdered milk (39.15 percent), pulse gram (38.55 percent), garlic (36.05 percent), chilies powder (28.98 percent), pulse moong (28.48 percent), gents sandal (25.01 percent), shirting (24.97 percent), salt powder (24.61 percent), LPG (23.11 percent), pulse mash (22.73 percent), beef (22.38 percent), and electricity charges for q1 (21.46 percent), while a decrease was observed in the prices of wheat flour (31.62 percent), cooking oil 5 liter (14.37 percent), vegetable ghee 2.5 kg (11.25 percent), vegetable ghee 1 kg (10.63 percent), mustard oil (8.63 percent), eggs (2.99 percent), rice basmati broken (2.93 percent) and tea lipton (2.52 percent). During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 29 (56.87 percent) items increased, 05 (9.80 percent) items decreased and 17 (33.33 percent) items remained stable. The SPI for the week under review was recorded at 321.40 points against 318.96 points registered in the previous week, according to the PBS data released on Friday. The SPI for the consumption group up to Rs. 17,732, Rs. 17,732-Rs. 22,888, Rs. 22,889-Rs. 29,517, Rs. 29,518-Rs. 44,175 and above Rs. 44,175 increased by 0.49 percent, 0.58 percent, 0.62 percent,0.72 percent, and 0.87 percent respectively.
