US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he spoke with Apple CEO Tim Cook and urged him not to expand production facilities in India but to focus on building in America instead.
“I had a little problem with Tim Cook yesterday,” Trump said during his visit to Qatar.
“I said to him, Tim, you’re my friend, I treated you very good. You’re coming here with $500 billion, but now you’re building all over India,” he added, referring to Apple’s plan to invest $500 billion in the US over the next four years.
Trump said he told the Apple CEO not to build production facilities in India, adding that Apple will be “upping their production in the United States.”
Trump criticized India’s trade policies, claiming that selling American goods there is “very difficult” due to it having “one of the highest tariff barriers in the world.”
However, he added that India, in pursuit of an agreement on import duties, has offered a “no-tariff” deal.
Earlier this month, Cook said that most Apple products destined for the U.S. market in the coming months will be sourced from India and Vietnam, rather than China, the country most impacted by Trump’s tariffs.
