Pakistan has formally launched an independent electricity market following the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority’s (NEPRA) issuance of a market operator license to the Independent System and Market Operator (ISMO).
ISMO replaces the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) and enables direct electricity purchases between consumers and suppliers.
ISMO begins with a three-member board. Syed Zakariya Ali Shah, Additional Secretary Power Division, will serve as CEO. Secretary Power Muhammad Fakhar Alam and Joint Secretary Finance Sajjad Haider will serve as directors. The board will expand to 11 members.
Separately, NEPRA conducted public hearings on two K-Electric solar projects: a 150 MW plant at Deh Metha Gar and a 120 MW plant at Deh Halkani in Sindh. The projects are part of KE’s plan to add 1,300 MW of renewable energy by 2030. Both secured Pakistan’s lowest-ever renewable tariff at Rs. 9.8 per unit, which was bid by Kot Addu Power Company Limited (KAPCO).
