What is NTN (National Tax Number) in Pakistan and How to Get One?

A National Tax Number (NTN) is a unique statutory identification number issued by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to track the tax registration, filings, and economic transactions of individuals, businesses, and corporations in Pakistan.

Under Section 181 of the Income Tax Ordinance 2001, every individual or entity deriving taxable income or carrying on a business in Pakistan is required to apply for registration with the FBR. For Pakistani individual citizens, the 13-digit Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) acts as their NTN.

1. Types of NTN in Pakistan

- **Salaried / Individual NTN:** Issued to employees and individuals for tax deduction on salary and personal wealth filing.
- **Business Individual (Sole Proprietor) NTN:** Assigned to individuals operating an unincorporated business under a commercial trade name.
- **Partnership / AOP NTN:** A unique 7-digit statutory registration issued to registered partnership firms and Association of Persons.
- **Corporate NTN:** Issued to Private Limited, Public Limited, and Single Member Companies incorporated with the SECP.

2. Documents Required for NTN Registration

- **For Salaried Individuals:** Valid CNIC copy, mobile number registered in own CNIC, active email address.
- **For Business Individuals / Sole Proprietorship:** Valid CNIC, business premises utility bill (< 3 months old), rent agreement or ownership proof, business letterhead.
- **For AOPs / Partnerships:** Partnership Deed, Form C from Registrar of Firms, CNIC copies of all partners, partnership bank maintenance certificate.
- **For Companies:** SECP Certificate of Incorporation, Memorandum & Articles of Association (MOA/AOA), CNIC copies of directors.

3. When is an NTN Mandatory?

An NTN is required by law for:
1. Opening and operating commercial business bank accounts.
2. Registering and transferring motor vehicles above specified engine capacities.
3. Purchasing, selling, or registering real estate.
4. Obtaining import/export licenses (WeBOC registration) and Sales Tax (STRN).
5. Securing memberships in Chambers of Commerce & Industry (ICCI, LCCI, KCCI).
