The Senate Standing Committee on Finance was informed on Thursday by officials of the Ministry of Finance that a proposal is under study to limit electricity subsidy to only Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) beneficiaries.
The committee, led by Chairman Senator Saleem Mandiwalla, was briefed on matters related to electricity subsidy provided to consumers.
The officials said that the Ministry of Finance, Power Division and other related stakeholders are currently working on the said proposal.
However, Senator Anusha Rahman Ahmad was of the opinion that there should be no subsidy on electricity and said providing subsidy is akin to making the beneficiaries “beggars”.
Industry representatives from Karachi, who also attended the meeting, said that there is discrimination against them when it comes to power subsidies. The committee chairman said that the matter has been referred to the Power Committee.
