Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to finalize the privatization of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) by June 2025, four months earlier than the previously planned October deadline to fulfill International Monetary Fund (IMF) conditions, Privatization Commission sources informed ProPakistani.
The Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Privatization, and PIA officials have been instructed to expedite the process. Sources said a security audit will be conducted to facilitate the reopening of US flight routes, a move aimed at improving PIA’s financial position.
Sources said consultations with the US Federal Aviation Authority will begin soon. A delegation of American experts is expected to visit Pakistan in March or April for further discussions.
The IMF has demanded that all necessary steps be taken to complete PIA’s privatization before July, sources added.
