Power Minister Awais Leghari raised serious concerns over recent decisions by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) regarding K-Electric’s licences and tariffs and how they could have potentially long-term impacts on consumer pricing and federal subsidies.
Power Minister Awais Leghari said that NEPRA’s rulings cover K-Electric’s generation, transmission, distribution, and supply licences, as well as its investment plan for the upcoming multi-year tariff period. He warned such decisions could significantly affect consumer tariffs and the government’s financial obligations under the uniform tariff regime.
The Ministry is initiating a review of NEPRA’s recent verdicts on transmission, distribution, and supply. Separately, a request for reconsideration of the earlier decision on K-Electric’s generation tariff, submitted in December 2024, is still pending before NEPRA. Leghari warned that the delay in resolving this matter poses serious financial consequences for the power sector, particularly in managing subsidies.
Leghari further cautioned that if key regulatory issues remain unaddressed, they could adversely affect consumers and weaken the overall regulatory environment. This could also hinder efforts to attract private sector participation in power distribution.
