Sugar Prices Increase Again at Utility Stores
The price of sugar at Utility Stores has again been increased by Rs. 5 per kg to Rs. 150 per kg, sources informed ProPakistani.
This marks a total increase of Rs. 10 per kg in the past 1.5 weeks. Sugar was selling for around Rs. 140 per kg at the state-run outlets before today’s increase.
The hike follows a further increase in sugar prices in the open market. Despite the rise, sugar at utility stores remains cheaper than in the open market, sources added.
It bears mentioning that the federal government discontinued subsidies on five essential commodities at the Utility Stores, including sugar, in August 2024.
Meanwhile, sources said the federal government wants to fix the official price of sugar in the market at Rs. 140 per kg. The Sugar Advisory Board has expressed concern over rising sugar prices and aims to implement measures in line with the Prime Minister’s directives to curb inflation. A final decision will be taken in the board meeting on Monday, including actions against those failing to comply with the official rate list.
