US President Donald Trump Monday claimed that US involvement played a key role in preventing a potential nuclear conflict between Pakistan and India.
“We stopped a nuclear conflict. I think it could have been a bad nuclear war; millions of people could have been killed. So, I’m very proud of that,” Trump said while speaking to reporters at the White House.
He added that the United States remains prepared to assist both countries in maintaining peace, crediting his administration with helping to facilitate the ceasefire.
Speaking at a White House event, Trump also suggested that trade considerations significantly influenced the decision to end hostilities.
“Trade is a big reason why they stopped fighting”, Trump said.
On Saturday, President Trump announced a ceasefire between Pakistan and India after intense military exchanges and rising hostilities between the two countries. In a later statement, the US President also expressed his willingness to help Pakistan and India find a resolution to the long-standing Kashmir dispute following the announcement of a ceasefire between the two countries.
