Airport Cargo Charges Increased by Up to 100%

The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has significantly raised cargo handling fees across the country, with some tariffs increasing by up to 100 times—the first major adjustment in half a decade. The revision aims to align rates with the current operational expenses of airport services. According to an official notification issued early Wednesday, the new tariff structure came into effect on July 1. This is the first update to cargo rates in five years and was approved by PAA’s executive committee. Under the updated rates, the cost of transporting pet birds has risen by 50%, climbing from Rs200 to Rs300 per kilogram. Similarly, charges for shipping betel leaves have doubled, now costing Rs70 per kilogram. General cargo fees have also been revised upward by 25%, increasing from Rs100 to Rs125 per kilogram. The new tariff structure also includes updated rates for other pet animals like cats and dogs, as well as items classified under general cargo. PAA officials have defended the increase, citing a long-standing freeze on tariffs despite a continual rise in airport-related operating costs. The PAA, established as an autonomous entity in August 2024 under Section 3 of the Pakistan Airports Authority Act, is responsible for the oversight, development, and efficient management of airport and air transport services throughout the country.
