The Power Division has clarified that news circulating on social media regarding a “ban on installing two electricity meters” is false, misleading, and a poor attempt to spread unrest among the public.
Addressing the issue on social media, the ministry said spreading and sharing such false news is a punishable offense under the PECA Act.

The ministry further explained that a second electricity meter can still be obtained for any residential building under the prevailing laws. According to the NEPRA Consumer Services Manual 2021, a separate meter can be installed at a residential unit that consists of a separate portion, separate circuit, separate entrance, and separate kitchen. However, the law to prevent the illegal use of electricity and the misuse of subsidies was already in place and is still fully enforced.
“The public is requested not to pay attention to such false news and to cooperate with the electricity distribution companies in the accurate and transparent use of electricity meters so that the rightful person continues to receive their rights in a timely and proper manner,” the ministry added.
