Govt Abolishes 54,000 Jobs to Save Rs. 56 Billion
A total of 54,000 government posts have been abolished under the federal government’s right-sizing initiative, resulting in financial savings of Rs. 56 billion. According to officials of the Right-Sizing Committee, 39 ministries and 300 departments have so far undergone the rationalization process aimed at restructuring and streamlining the federal bureaucracy to improve efficiency and reduce redundant positions. The committee revealed that out of 441 departments, 301 have completed the right-sizing process, and the Cabinet has already approved recommendations related to these departments. Implementation of these approved recommendations is currently underway. Meanwhile, the right-sizing process for 19 departments under nine ministries is in progress, with the committee having finalized and forwarded its recommendations for these departments to the Cabinet for approval. Once the Cabinet gives its consent for the remaining 19 departments, the implementation phase will begin immediately. Additionally, the committee is preparing recommendations for 10 more ministries, which are expected to be finalized soon. Officials said the exercise aims to ensure that government operations are aligned with fiscal discipline and modern administrative needs. As part of the restructuring process, the Utility Stores Corporation and Pakistan Public Works Department (Pak PWD) have been shut down, while the Ministry of Kashmir Affairs has been merged with SAFRON, and the Ministries of Defence and Aviation have also been combined. These mergers are part of the government’s broader plan to eliminate overlapping functions and ensure more coherent policy coordination. Sources said the Prime Minister has directed a review of all regulatory authorities to assess their performance and relevance in the current governance structure. He also instructed the committee to evaluate training institutions operating under different ministries. The government is considering merging multiple training institutes into a few national-level institutions to improve efficiency, resource utilization, and quality of training across the federal setup.
