The federal government has decided not to purchase wheat this year in line with commitments made with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Federal Minister for Food Security Rana Tanveer Hussain informed the National Assembly today.
According to the minister, domestic wheat production in 2025 is expected to be sufficient to meet national consumption needs for the 2025–26 period. He said any future decision to import or export wheat will depend on prevailing market demand.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has constituted a cabinet committee to develop a comprehensive wheat policy. In addition, a Cabinet Committee on Essential Commodities has also been formed under his chairmanship, which has already convened twice under the leadership of the Deputy Prime Minister, the minister added.
