The Power Division is in favor of free electricity to employees of government-owned power sector entities. It claims it is part of their employment terms and conditions besides other benefits such as medical care and accommodation.
441.5 million units of electricity are provided annually at no cost to 200,000 employees across public and corporate sector entities, reported a national daily.
Of this, 308.2 million units are allocated to current employees, while retired employees receive 133.2 million units.
Among the beneficiaries, 149,000 employees of distribution companies (Discos) receive free electricity units annually as part of their service package.
In a recently written response to the National Assembly, the Power Division explained that such benefits are common in other public and corporate sector organizations like PIA, SNGPL, SSGC, Pakistan Railways, and PTCL.
