Huawei Beats Apple as The Second Largest Smartphone Seller in Q2 2018
Huawei has just surpassed Apple as the second largest smartphone seller today for Q2 2018. Research firm International Data Corporation (IDC) released its numbers which show that Huawei overtook Apple as the 2nd biggest phone maker, based solely on the number of devices both firms shipped in the second quarter of 2018 that ended on June 30. Huawei shipped about 54.2 million handsets for the second quarter, registering a 40.9% growth compared to the same quarter last year. Meanwhile, Apple shipped approximately 41.3 million units for 0.7% growth since last year. The iPhone-seller came short of Wall Street’s estimated mark of 41.79 million. Despite the 10.4% decrease in units shipped last year, Samsung remains the undisputed No.1 smartphone seller where it sold 71.5 million units and stands at 20.9% market share. Working revenue of the world’s greatest chip and smartphone maker rose 5.7% to $14.9 billion (from $13.3 billion) within the second quarter of 2018. Furthermore, the IDC report states that Apple has not been the No.1 or No.2 smartphone company in terms of market share since the second quarter of 2018. “To say the least, its ability to move into markets where, until recently, the brand was largely unknown is impressive,” said Ryan Reith, IDC’s Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers Vice President. Other than the growth in new markets, the IDC attributes the success of Huawei primarily to the Honor brand and a healthy reception for the P20 series. Huawei is now fighting hard to enter the US market; the company was finally able to sign a partnership with AT&T. The Chinese company has had a heated tussle with the US lawmakers in recent past. The results concluded that while Apple’s smartphone sales grew, they aren’t growing as fast as Huawei and its fellow Chinese company Xiaomi. It remains to be seen how these companies will perform in the Q3 and Q4 of 2018.
