Pakistan’s Current Account Posts 5th Consecutive Surplus in December 2024
Pakistan recorded a monthly surplus of US$ 582 million in December 2024. According to Topline Securities, December 2024 was the fifth consecutive month of surplus due to higher remittances and improved trade balance. This takes the 1HFY25 current account to a surplus of US$ 1,210 million as compared to a deficit of US$ 1,397 million in 1HFY24. Earlier current account surplus in 5MFY25 was US$ 944 million, and in 1HFY25 the surplus has reached US$ 1.21 billion, increasing by US$ 266 million vs. December 2024 reported surplus figure of US$ 582 million. This suggests data for previous months is adjusted to the extent of US$ 316 million. Worker remittances clocked in at $3.079 billion, an increase of 29 percent YoY as compared to the previous year. For 1HFY25, the country’s worker remittances clocked in at $17.84 billion, an increase of nearly 33 percent as compared to SPLY. The country’s total export of goods amounted to $16.2 billion in 1HFY25. Imports clocked in at $27.7 billion during the period, according to SBP data.
