PM Shehbaz Greenlights 100MW Solar Project for Gwadar, Gilgit Baltistan

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday approved the immediate launch of a 100 megawatt solar project, calling it essential for providing uninterrupted and affordable electricity to Gwadar and Gilgit Baltistan as part of a wider overhaul of the power sector. Chairing a briefing on energy reforms, the prime minister said all relevant institutions must work together to deliver reliable power to Gwadar Port City. He said uninterrupted supply in the region will support national economic activity and help attract new investment. The PM also issued special instructions to begin the 100 MW solar project in Gilgit Baltistan without delay. He said the welfare and economic development of GB’s people remains a top priority for the federal government and that the project must provide clean, sustainable and environmentally friendly energy. Officials were informed that the committee led by Ahsan Iqbal and the Ministry of Energy had prepared a comprehensive plan addressing immediate, short-term and long-term needs.  The PM said their recommendations were commendable and directed that implementation must begin at once. Energy Minister Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari told the meeting that power disruptions in Gwadar had already been reduced by 42 percent due to recent steps. A plan has been prepared to stabilize voltage levels within six months. He said new measures will also ensure a reliable supply for domestic and commercial consumers. Short-term projects include adding 9.7 megawatts of solar capacity in major government buildings over the next eight to twelve months. Long-term plans include a new 40 megawatt project to support Gwadar’s sustainable power supply. Officials noted that electricity demand in Gwadar is expected to rise by 30 percent in the coming years due to industrial expansion, port development and rapid urban growth.
