Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman Major General (retd) Hafeez Ur Rehman has said that preparations for Pakistan’s 5G spectrum auction have been completed and the launch of 5G services is approaching.
Speaking during an informal interaction with media representatives, he said the PTA would request the government to hold the 5G spectrum auction before Ramadan.
The PTA chairman said the information memorandum for the auction would be issued within the next 10 to 15 days. After its release, telecom operators will be given 45 days to complete the required process. He added that if the information memorandum is issued by January 1, the 5G spectrum auction could take place on February 15.
Addressing a national cybersecurity awareness seminar, Hafeez Ur Rehman stressed the importance of learning advanced digital skills in today’s digital age. He said it is a misconception for people to believe they fully understand the digital world. He noted that many people spend several hours daily on social media and advised using digital platforms only when needed.
The PTA chairman also highlighted rising cyber risks, referring to a case where a citizen was defrauded of Rs. 30 million. He said such incidents show the need for greater caution and public awareness. He further warned that artificial intelligence-generated videos can be highly misleading, making it difficult to tell the difference between real and fake content.
He said the government is playing its role by introducing relevant laws, but emphasized that individuals must also take responsibility for their own digital safety. Hafeez Ur Rehman added that public awareness can help prevent financial losses and save lives, and reaffirmed that efforts would continue to ensure a safe and secure digital environment in Pakistan.
