Warsak 2nd Rehabilitation Project Concluded through EU Grant
The European Union (EU), through Agence Française de Développement (AFD) as Lead Partner, in collaboration with the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), European Investment Bank and KfW, has successfully concluded the Warsak 2nd Rehabilitation Project. A defining feature of the project was its Community Development Program (CDP), funded through the EU grant, which ensured that local communities benefitted directly from development investments. On the technical front, the project delivered critical upgrades that will extend the operational life of the Warsak Dam. These include the installation of advanced sediment management systems, modernization of mechanical workshops and electro-mechanical equipment, and improved flood resilience measures. Together, these interventions safeguard generation capacity, improve efficiency, and enhance dam safety, strengthening Pakistan’s energy security. At Gora Tajik Hospital, the CDP improved healthcare services by providing modern medical equipment, constructing a medical warehouse, and enabling solarization along with a diesel generator set for uninterrupted service. These interventions significantly enhanced patient care, leading to a sharp rise in outpatient visits. Dr. Erum Qayum, Medical Superintendent of Gara Tajik Hospital, noted that the facilities provided under the EU grant have multiplied OPD patients many times compared to the past. At the community level, the CDP introduced wide-ranging initiatives to empower livelihoods and improve living standards. These included the installation of deep tubewells for safe drinking and irrigation water, upgradation and solarization of schools, provision of school furniture, and the rehabilitation of community infrastructure. Together, these measures have strengthened education, water access, and social cohesion across the Warsak region. The closing events, attended by WAPDA officials, local representatives, and beneficiaries, underscored the value of international collaboration. Mr. Hameed Ullah Khan (Chief Engineer/Project Director) and Mr. Muhammad Idrees (Project Engineer), along with their team, emphasized that the success of the project reflects the strength of partnerships between WAPDA, AFD, EU, EIB, and KfW. “The Warsak Rehabilitation Project goes beyond infrastructure. It has brought prosperity to local communities, proving that development must combine engineering excellence with social investment,” said Mr. Khan. With its completion, the Warsak 2nd Rehabilitation Project leaves behind a lasting legacy of improved energy infrastructure, stronger healthcare systems, better education facilities, and empowered livelihoods. The project stands as a model of how international donors and national institutions can work together to drive sustainable development in Pakistan.
